Qi has studied at Columbia University in the City of New York in Biomedical Engineering (SEAS), Healthcare Management (CBS, cross-registrant), then at University of Maryland Baltimore County in Chemical/Biochemical Enginerring, then at South China University of Technology in Biochemical Engineering, then at Shandong Polytechnic University in Fermentation Engineering.

Qi worked for Kite Pharma as Director/Principal Scientist between 2017 and 2018, for TCR2 Therapeutics Inc. as Principal Scientist between 2016 and 2017, for Novartis as Senior Scientist between 2014 and 2016, for Eli Lilly and Company as Senior Process Engineer (Sr. Asso. Consultant Biologist) between 2004 and 2013.
