Maria has studied at NTNU in Biotechnology between 2008 and 2011, then at Reykjavik Academy of Singing and Vocal Arts (Söngskólinn í Reykjavík) in Classical singing, then at Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden in Chemical engineering with Engineering physics between 2004 and 2006, then at University of Iceland in collaboration with the University of California Santa Barbara in Chemical Engineering between 2002 and 2004.

Maria worked for Technical University of Denmark as Assistant Professor at DTU Food between Jan 2013 and Aug 2015, for French National Institute of Agricultural Research as Post-doc between Jun 2011 and Dec 2012, for Matís ohf/Icelandic Food and Biotech Company as Project manager between Jan 2007 and Dec 2012, for Icelandic Fisheries Laboratories as Specialist / project manager between Jun 2005 and Dec 2006.
