Bernard has studied at National Cancer Institute, NIH in Cancer Immunotherapy between 1985 and 1990, then at in Regulatory Cell Biology and Biophysics between 1979 and 1985, then at in Immunology between 1975 and 1978.

Bernard worked for Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) as President / Immediate Past President between 2008 and 2012, for iSBTc as Vice President, International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer (iSBTc, now SITC) between 2006 and 2008, for Xian Jiaotung University, Xian, China as Guest Professor between 1999 and 2008, for Department of Surgery, Ludwig-Maximilians-University as Guest Professor between 2001 and 2002.
